Your Commitment Ceremony is a sincere exchange of vows between two people. Even though these ceremonies are not yet recognised by law, they can still be deeply moving heartfelt experiences.
You will want your Ceremony of Commitment to be shared by your families and friends in the same way as a Marriage, so you may like to browse through the Weddings link for further ideas.

I'm legally obliged to include the following:

The Attorney General's Office provides the following statement:

Same-sex Commitment Ceremony

The Marriage Act 1961 refers to marriage as "...the union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life." Accordingly, it is not possible for same sex couples to marry under existing Australian law.

It is not illegal to conduct commitment ceremonies between same-sex couples provided that they do not purport to be legal marriages. Some states in Australia (Tasmania, Canberra) are recognizing these civil unions, although there is still some debate on this matter.

Although not legal marriage, you may wish to retain the services of an experienced Civil Celebrant for your special day.
